Local History

First settled by John Winchell, from Wayne County, Mich., in 1827, originally called Millville, in 1828.  This stage post office was succeeded by a government post office named White Pigeon Prairie on February 16, 1833.  The name was shortened to White Pigeon on January 21, 1835.  Named for "Wahbememe, Chief White Pigeon, who about 1830 gave his life to save the settlement."
