Local HistoryStarted when Sumner and Wheeler built a sawmill here in 1833. Isaac Moffatt opened the first store in 1836. Smith and Merrick platted the village around 1838. It was named after Watervleit, N.Y., by its founders who came from that state. The named is supposed to mean Waterford and by that name it appears on the Farmer's Map of 1853 and in the Gazeteer of 1860. Incorporated as a village in 1891 and as a city in 1924.
