State Parks and Camping in MichiganLocal HistoryAlpheus Williams and Captain Archibald Phillips became the first settlers here in 1819. The name of the township and thence the name of the village was proposed about 1825 by Shubael Atherton, due to its large area of water surface. Thomas J. Drake became the first postmaster on February 4, 1835. The post office was transferred to and renamed Drayton Plains on August 24, 1858, but the Waterford post office was re-established on November 13, 1858.
