Local HistoryOriginally an Indian village. Its first white settlement was named Merritt. When the Pere Marquette Railroad came through its station here was named Manistee Junction and it was given a post in January, 1891. It was renamed on February 8, 1905, by an admirer of Wagner's opera Die Valkyrie, Walhalla meaning the banquet hall of the gods.
