Christopher B. Uptegraff (1830-1907) and native of New York State, came with his family to Michigan in 1840. He first settled on a farm in Groveland, and after his marriage to Martha Overhauser on November 15, 1857, moved to Richfield. In 1865 he moved to Otisville and worked as a blacksmith. In the spring of 1871, he moved to Davison Station, as it was known, and became the village's first blacksmith. The 1873 plat may of Genesee County listed C.B. Uptegraff as the owner of Lots nineteen, twenty, and twenty-one, and the C.B. Uptegraff Blacksmith Shop on Lot 24 in the village of Davison. Franklin Ellis' "History of Genesee County" (1879) listed C.B. Uptegraff as a partner in a cheese factory association. The 1879 assessment rolls for Davison Township show a $1,000 increase in the value of Uptegraff's personal property, suggesting that a house was built that year. In 1887, Christopher Uptegraff and his son Charles established a brick and tile manufacturing business in Davison. The senior Uptegraff withdrew from active management of the firm in 1892, leaving his three sons to run the business.
