State Parks and Camping in MichiganLocal HistoryFrench voyageurs found two deep indentations on Michigan's west coast. The larger one they called La Grande Traverse. In 1847, William Boardman, of Napierville, Illinois, bought land on a stream (now Boardman River) winding through the present town. His son Horace became the first white settler when he began logging on his father's land that year. In 1851, Hannah, Lay & Company, of Chicago, bought the Boardman holdings and developed the town. It had been called Wequetong, or Head of the Bay, until Albert T. Lay got it a post office as Traverse City on February 7, 1854, with Dr. David C. Goodale as its first postmaster. Incorporated as a village in 1881 and as a city in 1895. Perry Hannah is regarded as the father of Traverse City. Informational excerpts from Michigan Place Names, by Walter Romig, L.H.D.
