Exploring our Heritage through our Ancestors Local HistoryFirst platted as Moab by Christopher Shinnaman in 1830. An adjacent plat was made in 1831 by George Buck and Jacob McIntefer and called St. Joseph, which, when it failed in its bid to be the county seat, became farmland. From its location at the confluence of the St. Joseph, Rocky, and Portage Rivers, John H. Bowman named his new plat Three Rivers in November, 1836. A month later, George Buck and his associates platted Lockport and named it from their canal and water-power projects. In 1871, the corporation limits of Three Rivers were extended to embrace all these plats. It was given a post office as Bucks on October 10, 1871, changed to Lockport on March 8, 1837 and changed to Three Rivers on February 15, 1840. Incorporated as a village in 1855 and as a city in 1895. Informational
