Local HistorySamuel S. Hoyt became the first settler in the area in 1836, but the land on which the present village stands was first bought by speculators. It was given a post office as Sunfield, with Samuel W. Grinnell as its first postmaster. A station on the Detroit, Grand Rapids & Western Railroad. Incorporated as a village in 1899.
