Local History

Samuel S. Hoyt became the first settler in the area in 1836, but the land on which the present village stands was first bought by speculators.  It was given a post office as Sunfield, with Samuel W. Grinnell as its first postmaster.  A station on the Detroit, Grand Rapids & Western Railroad.  Incorporated as a village in 1899.
