John Wetmore made the first land entry here in 1821, but the first actual settler was John Daniels in 1823 from its location in Southfield Township, it was better known as Southfield Centre, but it was given a post office as Southfield on January 15, 1833, with John Thomas as its first postmaster.
The post office was located at nearby Crawford Corners, named for Abraham Crawford a large landowner, but the water power afforded by the Rouge River favored the Southfield site, and business as well as the post office moved there about 1838.
This post office operated until March 15, 1904. Southfield remained a village until the suburban boom. Incorporated as a city in 1958. Charles L. Curtis became the first postmaster of its restored post office on September 2, 1959. Informational excerpts from Michigan Place Names, by Walter Romig, L.H.D. |
