BusinessesLocal HistoryIn 1824, Orange Risdon, chief surveyor of the military road from Detroit to Chicago, bought 160 acres here. A few families came in 1826. Mr. Risdon returned from his surveying in 1827, platted the village in 1832 and named it after the Saline River running through it. The river had been named because of the salt springs in it. Incorporated as a village in 1866 and as a city in 1931. Informational excerpts from Michigan Place Names, by Walter Romig, L.H.D.
