BusinessesHospitals Restaurants Local HistoryWhile inspecting the locality in 1818, Governor Lewis Cass camped under a huge oak tree and recalled the story of the Royal Oak in Scotland under which the Pretender to the throne hid to escape his pursuers, and thus he named the place. William Thurber made the first land entry and became the first settler in the town in 1819. James Lockwood became the first postmaster on April 6, 1826. Sherman Stevens bought 120 acres in 1826 and made the first plat, which he recorded in 1838. Incorporated as a village in 1891 and as a city in 1921.
