Local HistoryIt was first settled in 1817 by James Graham and his family, from Mount Clemens. John Hersey made the first official land purchase in 1818. Most of the early settlers were from western New York State and the town was named after Rochester, N.Y. Governor Lewis Cass with Austin E. Wing and Charles Larned, of Detroit, surveyed the area and laid out the first plat of the village in 1826. Incorporated as a village in 1869.
