Rogers bought land from Jesse Hoyt for actual settlement here, but Mrs. Louisa Woodruff and her son, Daniel, built and occupied the first house, with Mr. Rogers building his the next year. Mr. A. W. Gates, a stage proprietor, got the town a post office and a plank road and it was named Gates, with Mr. Rogers becoming its first postmaster on November 13, 1871. G. W. Reese, as superintendent, got the Detroit & Bay City Railroad through here in 1873, and the station was named for him in 1874 as was its post office, on April 30, 1874, and the town became known as Reese.
