It was founded by promoters from Detroit, Colonel Stephen Mack who, with Major Joseph Todd, William Lester and Orison Allen, became the first settlers in 1818.
It was developed by the Pontiac Company, of which Colonel Mack was manager. Given a post office on May 1, 1822, with Olmstead Chamberlin as its first postmaster.
Platted by H.J. Goodale in 1841. Incorporated as village in 1837 and a city in 1861. Named for a local Ottawa chief.
