BusinessesState Parks and Camping in MichiganLocal HistoryEdwin R. Cobb and Andrew Rector bought the first government land here in 1849 and built their sawmill in 1853. Charles Mears came in 1856, built a sawmill and a boarding house and called his part of the village Middlesex. Mr. Cobb became the first postmaster of Pent Water on March 17, 1855, and the first supervisor when the township was organized in 1856. It was platted in 1862 and incorporated as the village of Pent Water in 1867. The spelling changed to Pentwater on May 23, 1894. Some take the name from the smallness of the outlet of Pentwater Lake, hence pent-up water, others say it was a corruption of paint water, a name originally given from the dark color of the lake beside which the village was built.
