Local History

The village began on land owned by Matthew and John Van Vleck.  The latter suggested the name of the town in honor of General Zachary Taylor's victory at Palo Alto in the first battle of the Mexican War on May 8, 1846.  The village was first platted and recorded by William H. Freeman on March 12, 1867.
