BusinessesLocal HistoryIn 1852, Reverend Peter Doughterty, a Presbyterian minister, moved his Indian mission from Old Mission to New Mission, across the Grand Traverse Bay. It was given a post office as Omena on February 9, 1858, with him as its first postmaster. Tradition has it that the place acquired its name from his habitual response to any statement made by an Indian: Omena? (Is it so?). Services have been held in its church each Sunday since its dedication in 1858. It was in Grand Traverse County until Leelanau was organized in 1863.
