BusinessesLocal HistoryThe first white settlers here were Manley Patchin in 1836 and William Hathaway, Jr., in 1839. The named was changed from Crockery Creek to Nunica on January 8, 1859. The word Nunica is derived from the Indian menonica, meaning clay earth, from which they made pottery. This was also the reason for the earlier name of Crockery Creek.
