It was known as the Wells' Settlement until December 8, 1848, when, with Henry Rix as its first postmaster, it was given a post office named Memphis, after the Egyptian city and meaning place of good adobe. Incorporated as village in 1865 and as a city in 1953. Informational excerpts from Michigan Place Names, by Walter Romig, L.H.D.
