State Parks and Camping in MichiganLocal HistoryThe village was founded with the coming through of the Duluth, South Shore & Atlantic Railroad in 1881, and was named for James Stoughton McMillan, an executive of the road and later a U.S. Senator. Storekeeper Lewis Pearl became it first postmaster on April 21, 1882. It was first in Chippewa County and was transferred to Luce in 1887.
