Local HistoryThe first settler, Lewis Lacey, came here in 1836 to build a sawmill for (Charles) Noble & Company, of Monroe. Mr. Noble made and recorded the first plat of the village in 1838. It became the county seat in 1840. Its name was changed from Mason Center to Mason on November 10, 1842. Incorporated as a village in 1865 and as a city in 1875. Named for Governor Stevens T. Mason.
