Local HistoryIn 1833, Major John Gilbert received a grant of 400 acres and had it surveyed and platted, but did not settle on it. However, in that year, James Harvey Fargo, and his uncle, Steven Fargo, built and operated a sawmill and a grist mill here as the Manchester Mill Company. Incorporated as a village in 1867.
