Local HistoryThe village began in 1872 as a depot called Terry's or Terry's Station on the Mackinaw division of the Michigan Central Railroad, and was named for James G. Terry, head of the local lumber firm of Terry, Seely & Company. At the suggestion of James Tyne, a village leader, the name was changed on June 28, 1882, to Linwood, from a combination of the words line and wood, and it was heavily wooded. Its railroad station was renamed Linwood Park. Informational excerpts from Michigan Place Names, by Walter Romig, L.H.D.
