Leelanau State Park, Northport

Local History

It lies just south of an old Indian village called Shemacopink.  The first white settler, Antoine Manseau, from Manistee, built his home here in 1853.  The county seat since 1882.  The name lee land (from stormy seas, the quarter toward which the wind blows, it is quite exposed to winds from the north) became Leland.
