Local HistoryThe first land purchases in the area were made by John Shaft, Joshua Baker and Alma H. White, all in 1836. The coming of John Waterhouse and his family formed the nucleus around which the village of Waterhouse Corners grew. The post office and village were renamed Kinderhook on June 7, 1843, honoring President Martin Van Buren, who had been born in Kinderhook, N.Y.
