Local History
The site was known in the early mining days as the Lake Superior Location, taking its name from its parent, the Lake Superior Mine; first settled in 1856, it took the name of Ishpeming (Chippewa for heaven or high place) in 1862.
Captain Gilbert D. Johnson became its first postmaster on February 17, 1863. Incorporated as a village in 1871 and as a city in 1873. Informational excerpts from Michigan Place Names, by Walter Romig, L.H.D.
