State Parks and Camping in MichiganLocal HistoryNathan Herrick made the first land entry here in 1830. Ira C. Alger built a sawmill in 1843 and a grist mill, he became the first station-agent of Algerville when the Detroit & Milwaukee Railroad came through in 1855. Peter Fagan secured a post office named Holly Mills, with Marcus L. Young becoming its first postmaster on July 3, 1851. First platted by James G. Mitchell in 1855. Renamed Holly on December 7, 1861, doubtless from the beautiful holly which grew and still grows in the area as well as from the fact that 1835 settler Jonathan T. Allen came from Mount Holly, N.J. Incorporated as a village in 1865. Informational excerpts from Michigan Place Names, by Walter Romig, L.H.D.
