Local HistoryIn 1836, Eurotas P. Hastings, president of the Bank of Michigan, sold his holdings here to a Marshall firm of promoters on the strength of the promise of the county commissioners to make this site the county seat. That fall, the company built a sawmill and a grist mill to attract settlers. Slocum H. Bunker, the first settler, built the first house in 1836. The village became the county seat about 1841. Incorporated as a village in 1855 and as a city in 1871. Informational excerpts from Michigan Place Names, by Walter Romig, L.H.D.
