Local HistoryIn 1849-49, Crosier Davison, of Detroit, built a fishery and cooperage here. Morris & McDougal, of New York State, bought government pine land and set up lumber operations here in 1862. The site of these two enterprises became known as McDougal's landing. Later, William Conklin owned the largest of the lumbering companies and built the first sawmill here. About 1867, at the suggestion of a Conklin employee, who had come from Greenbush, Rensselaer County, N.Y., the name was changed. Informational excerpts from Michigan Place Names, by Walter Romig, L.H.D.
