Local HistoryThe town site was carved from the Township of Minnewasca (Sioux for white water). In 1887 when the plat was about to be recorded, William D. Washburn, flour miller and projector of the Minneapolis, St. Paul & Sault Ste. Marie Railroad (completed with British capital), got its named changed from Minnewasca to that of the British prime minister, William Ewart Gladstone.
