Midland's history comes alive at The Historical Square, a complex of buildings and artifacts recalling the pioneer days of the community and the Midland Chemical Company, forerunner of The Dow Chemical Company.
The Herbert H. Dow Historical Museum, the newest addition to Midland's Historical Square, traces the history of Herbert H. Dow and The Dow chemical Company. The museum includes a replica of the Evens Flour Mill Complex where the 24-year-old Dow pioneered his experiments on the separation of bromine from natural brine by electrolysis. This and several adjacent buildings are replicas of the original Midland Chemical Company.
The museum features ten galleries of photos, graphics and artifacts relating to the early years of Dow's family and business enterprises. Other exhibits outline H. H. Dow's contributions to chemistry as well as his contributions of Midland. An especially interesting exhibit is a replica of the laboratory Dow used from 1890 to 1892.
Historical Square is also home to the Bradley Home. Built in 1874, the Bradley Home is an example of Victorian Gothic architecture displaying period furnishings. This charming Victorian home reflects the lifestyle of affluent 19th century Midland families. Originally located one block off Main Street, the house was moved to the Historic Sites complex in 1970 on the edge of Emerson Park. The carriage house includes carriages, sleigh and blacksmith tools. Listed on the National Register of Historical Places.
