Bewabic State Park

Local History

It was in Marquette County when founded in 1880 by George Runkel, Samuel D. Hollister and William Morrison.  Platted for Mr. Runkel and James H. Howe by John Pumpelly in 1881.

It was named by Mr. Runkel for the crystal beauty of the valls (Crystal Falls) on the Paint River running by it.

Iron County was set off in 1884 (but not organized until 1885).  Crystal Falls became the county seat.  Incorporated as a village in 1889 and as a city in 1899.
