Local History

Justin Smith purchased the first land here in 1823 and Gardner Williams made the first clearing in 1832.  Curtis Emerson bought a disused mill here in 1846 and built a settlement around it.

The place was named in honor of General Zachary Taylor's recent victory over Santa Ana in the Mexican War.
