Campgrounds in MichiganLocal HistoryCalvin H. Swaine, a Baptist minister from Washington County, N.Y., made the first land claim here in 1832, built a sawmill in 1833, and became the first postmaster of Swainesville on July 28, 1834. Co-settlers were Calvin H. Swaine, Jr., Chauncey Hawley, Lewis Cass and Israel Love. By popular vote the name was changed to Brooklyn, after Brooklyn, N.Y., on October 23, 1836.
