Local HistoryIn 1860, Sterne Brunson, Henry c. Morton and Charles Hull developed the site by having a canal built from it to the harbor and in 1863 they platted the village. First called Brunson Harbor, it was renamed for Thomas Hart Benton, a Missouri senator who had fostered Michigan's plea for statehood. Incorporated as a village by the supervisors in 1866 and by the legislature in 1869. Incorporated as a city in 1891. Informational excerpts from Michigan Place Names, by Walter Romig, L.H.D.
