Local History

In 1860, Sterne Brunson, Henry c. Morton and Charles Hull developed the site by having a canal built from it to the harbor and in 1863 they platted the village.  First called Brunson Harbor, it was renamed for Thomas Hart Benton, a Missouri senator who had fostered Michigan's plea for statehood.  Incorporated as a village by the supervisors in 1866 and by the legislature in 1869.  Incorporated as a city in 1891.
