Local HistoryThis village in Lincoln Township was founded and named by Joseph W. Ash in November 1868, when the route of the Grand Rapids & Indiana Railroad had been determined through here. Given a post office named Bates on January 17, 1870, with Matthias L. Swan as its first postmaster, it was renamed Ashton on January 11, 1871. Mr. Ash platted the village in 1872.
